Procedures at Sydney Day Surgery

Most consultations, biopsies and single-tooth procedures are done under local anaesthetic in our Sydney City rooms. We book day surgery in Newtown when a general anaesthetic is the better option, for example:

• Wisdom teeth removal, including several teeth at once and coronectomy
• Dental implants and bone grafting
• Exposure of impacted teeth for orthodontic treatment
• Removal of jaw cysts and larger lesions

Whether you need day surgery or rooms is decided with you at your consultation.

Your day of surgery

• Before: once your surgery is booked, the day surgery will contact you with admission paperwork, your arrival time and fasting instructions. Follow these exactly.
• On the day: arrive at the RPAH Medical Centre, on the RPA campus, at the time given. You will meet the anaesthetist before surgery.
• Going home: day surgery means you go home the same day. You need an adult to collect you and stay with you overnight after a general anaesthetic.
• Afterwards: we see you for your review at Macquarie Street, and send a report to your dentist.

Fees

Day surgery involves three separate fees: the surgeon, the anaesthetist (typically $500 to $900) and the facility. With private hospital cover, the facility fee is usually just your policy excess; without cover, the Sydney Day Surgery fee is $1,350. See About our Fees (PDF).
