Wisdom Teeth Removal
Lower wisdom teeth are the most common reason patients are referred to Oromax. Dr Tom Jaunay, a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon, removes wisdom teeth in our rooms under local anaesthetic, or in private hospital under general anaesthetic.
When do wisdom teeth need to come out?
Removal is usually recommended when a wisdom tooth is causing problems, such as:
- Repeated gum infections around the tooth (pericoronitis), or one severe infection
- Decay in the wisdom tooth, or decay or gum damage on the back of the tooth in front
- A cyst or other change around the tooth on the X-ray
- The tooth being in the way of orthodontic or other planned treatment
Wisdom teeth that are causing no problems do not always need to be removed. We will talk through the balance of risks with you.
Assessment and planning
We review your X-ray (OPG) at your consultation. If the roots appear close to the nerve that supplies feeling to the lip, chin and tongue, we take a 3D scan (CBCT) to plan the safest approach. Where the roots are wrapped around the nerve, we may recommend a coronectomy: removing the crown of the tooth and leaving the roots in place so the nerve is not disturbed.
Awake or asleep?
- Local anaesthetic in our rooms: suits upper wisdom teeth, erupted or partly erupted lower teeth, and single teeth.
- General anaesthetic in a private hospital: suits deeply impacted teeth, several teeth at once, significant anxiety or medical reasons.
Recovery
Pain and swelling usually peak on day 2 or 3 and then settle. You go home with written instructions and an after-hours number, and we see you for a review. We send your dentist a report on your treatment.
